I will participate in a workshop at IREX in Washington D.C. on November 13, 2013.

The workshop is titled Social Network Analysis: Influence and Impact Beyond Likes and Retweets.  We will focus on the applications of social network analysis for development efforts, exploring how SNA can:

  • Create viral and influential advocacy and political campaigns
  • Find business and employment connections for entrepreneurs and youth
  • Identify hidden disease vectors and stop new infection pathways
  • Break circles of government corruption and graft
  • Target existing informal support resources for disaster response

The workshop will be facilitated by Wayan Vota along with three social network analysis researchers:

  1. Marc Smith, Social Media Research Foundation and NodeXL
  2. Rohan Grover, Upworthy  and  People For the American Way
  3. Behar Xharra, Kosovo Diaspora

This Deep Dive will be an active event. We will mix thoughtful discussions with experiential activities, building social capital while we learn about social networks. Participants are encouraged to submit social media topics in advance so maps and reports can be generated for the event.

November 13 at 6pm: Data Community DC Workshop on Analyzing Social Media Networks using NodeXL

05NovMay 7, 2015 By Marc Smith

Data Community DC Logo

NodeXL Logo

I am excited to have the opportunity to present a NodeXL workshop at the DC Data Community on November 13th at 6pm in Washington, D.C.

In this session I will describe the ways NodeXL can simplify the process of collecting, storing, analyzing, visualizing and publishing reports about connected structures.

2013-SMRF-NodeXL-SNA-5 steps for Social Media Network Analysis

For example, this is a map of the connections among the people who recently tweeted about the DataCommunityDC Twitter account was created with just a few clicks and no coding:

DataCommunityDC Twitter NodeXL SNA Map and Report for Tuesday, 05 November 2013 at 15:15 UTC

This graph represents a network of 67 Twitter users whose recent tweets contained “DataCommunityDC“, taken from a data set limited to a maximum of 10,000 tweets. The network was obtained from Twitter on Tuesday, 05 November 2013 at 15:15 UTC.
The tweets in the network were tweeted over the 7-day, 16-hour, 4-minute period from Monday, 28 October 2013 at 22:38 UTC to Tuesday, 05 November 2013 at 14:42 UTC.
There is an edge for each “replies-to” relationship in a tweet. There is an edge for each “mentions” relationship in a tweet. There is a self-loop edge for each tweet that is not a “replies-to” or “mentions”.
The network has been segmented into groups (“G1, G2, G3…”) and each group is labeled with the words most frequently used in the tweets from the people in that group.
The size of each Twitter user’s profile picture represents the log scaled value of their follower count.
Analysis of the network location of each participant reveals the people in key locations in the network, people at the “center” of the graph.

They are:

October 24th, 2013: NodeXL Social Media Network Analysis Workshop at Arizona State University

13OctMay 7, 2015 By Marc Smith

I will speak about social media networks on October 24th, 2013 at the department of Computer Science at the Arizona State University.

Invited-Talk-Marc-A.-Smith-pdf-copy-662x1024

The graph represents a network of 712 Twitter users whose recent tweets contained “@ASU”, taken from a data set limited to a maximum of 10,000 tweets. The network was obtained from Twitter on Sunday, 13 October 2013 at 19:56 UTC.

The tweets in the network were tweeted over the 4-day, 21-hour, 47-minute period from Tuesday, 08 October 2013 at 21:48 UTC to Sunday, 13 October 2013 at 19:35 UTC.

There is an edge for each “replies-to” relationship in a tweet. There is an edge for each “mentions” relationship in a tweet. There is a self-loop edge for each tweet that is not a “replies-to” or “mentions”.

The graph is directed.

The graph’s vertices were grouped by cluster using the Clauset-Newman-Moore cluster algorithm.

The graph was laid out using the Harel-Koren Fast Multiscale layout algorithm.

The edge colors are based on edge weight values. The edge widths are based on edge weight values. The edge opacities are based on edge weight values. The vertex sizes are based on followers values. The vertex opacities are based on followers values

This October 18, 2013 an NSF funded workshop called Kredible.Net to be held at Stanford University will bring together researchers studying  reputation and social roles in social media.

The workshop will help researchers investigate how social media, especially Wikipedia articles and editors, shape public knowledge. The project aims to build a research community and to propose a research agenda for the study of reputation and authority in informal knowledge markets, such as Wikipedia.

The team is lead by Sorin Adam Matei (PI) of Brian Lamb School of Communication, Elisa Bertino (Cyber Center), Michael Zhu and Chuanhai Liu (Department of Statistics) , and Luo Si (Department of Computer Science).

The KredibleNet project is supported by an international team of researchers including Marc Smith, director of the Social Media Research Foundation and the NodeXL project and by Dr. Luca De Alfaro, from University of California, Santa Cruz, the head of the WikiTrust project. The team also includes researchers Jure Leskovec (Stanford), Bernie Hogan (Oxford Internet Institute), and Ben Shneiderman (University of Maryland).

The KredibleNet grant will fund research and workshops that will reveal how social media leaders gain authority to shape public knowledge.

DSST 2013 Digital Societies and Social Technologies Summer Institute: NodeXL Training

University of Maryland — College Park, Maryland USA

I will be teaching a workshop on Thursday August 1st on using NodeXL for social media network analysis at the upcoming 2013 Digital Societies and Social Technologies Summer Institute at the University of Maryland.  The Institute is devoted to training researchers in methods and theory that can help frame research into the social impacts of information technology:

MOOCs, Education and learning; personal health and well-being; open innovation, eScience, and citizen science; co-production, open source, and new forms of work; cultural heritage and information access; energy management and climate change; civic hacking, engagement and government; disaster response; cybersecurity and privacy – these are just a few problem domains where effective design and robust understanding of complex sociotechnical systems is critical.  To meet these challenges a trans-disciplinary community of scholars has come together from fields as wide ranging as CSCW, HCI, social computing, organization studies, information visualization, social informatics, sociology, information systems, medical informatics, computer science, ICT for development, education, learning science, journalism, and political science.

For more information about the Summer Institute, contact the Summer Institute co-coordinators, Brian Butler (bsbutler@umd.edu) and Susan Winter (sjwinter@umd.edu).  For information about the broader community of researchers interested in design and study of sociotechnical systems, see:  CSST (www.sociotech.net), Social Webshop (http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/webshop2012/), the “Researchers of the Socio-Technical” Facebook group, or the CSST listserv (csst@listserv.syr.edu).
