3rd Party Data Importers for NodeXL: Web, Exchange, and Facebook Importers

NodeXL is extendable.  3rd Party developers have been building data providers that can plug into NodeXL that connect the network visualization tool to sources of network data.  We now have three providers of extensions to NodeXL: VOSON for WWW hyperlink networks, the Exchange Spigot for NodeXL for extracting enterprise email networks, and the Facebook Spigot for NodeXL that extracts your own Facebook network for analysis and visualization!

Import hyperlink networks into NodeXL with the VOSON System — a web-based software incorporating web mining, data visualisation, and traditional empirical social science methods (e.g. social network analysis, SNA).

Exchange Spigot for NodeXL enables Microsoft Excel plugin NodeXL to collect messaging data from the Microsoft Exchange Server and display that data as a graph.

Facebook Spigot for NodeXL is a new graph data provider for NodeXL which will allow each user to directly download and import from within NodeXL different Facebook networks.

This is a milestone for NodeXL! Prof. Robert Ackland from the Australian Demographic & Social Research Institute (ADSRI) at the Australian National University has created a data provider for NodeXL based on the VOSON (Virtual Observatory for the Study of Online Networks) Project.

With the VOSON Data Provider Plugin for NodeXL, you can now access VOSON hyperlink network construction services from within NodeXL, an Excel 2007/2010 template for analyzing social media network data. So there are two ways you can use VOSON for analyzing hyperlink networks: (1) via the VOSON System (which you login to using a web browser); (2) via VOSON+NodeXL. The VOSON System is a special tool for hyperlink network construction and analysis. NodeXL provides access to various types of social media network data sources, e.g. Facebook, Twitter and, now, WWW hyperlink networks via VOSON.

From Hyperlinks to Hyperties: Extending Goffman to Mobile Social Software

In my paper From Hyperlinks to Hyperties in  The Hyperlinked Society: Questioning Connections in the Digital Age (Joseph Turow and Lokman Tsui, Editors; which came from the symposium of the same name at Annenberg School of Communication in Philadelphia).  I propose one of the ways mobile devices and social software will change the nature of the “interaction order” is to create “hyperties” – here is the abstract of the paper:

A new form of hyperlink is emerging, the “hypertie,” which bridges the gap between links created in computational media and those authored in the physical world when people interact with one another and the objects around them. The hypertie is an innovation in the interaction order, the result of the merger of existing social practices of association with the technical affordances of mobile networked information systems and the existing hyperlink infrastructure. A new era in social life is arriving when the ties that bind people can be inscribed with decreasing effort into forms similar to the ways hyperlinks create connections between resources on the Internet and World Wide Web. New mobile devices represent a novel innovation in an otherwise slow-to-change realm of social interaction—face-to-face encounters. The result is a shift from a social world in which much is ephemeral to one in which even the most trivial of passings is archival.

The paper describes the ways soon to be available devices could change the ways people interact with one another.  This is part of the great shift of the Internet away from the desk towards many other nooks and crannies of the social world.
