A collection of NodeXL images on flickr: How many kinds of networks do you see?

I am coming to understand what is interesting in any particular network visualization by looking at many network visualizations.

Using NodeXL, I have made several maps of  social media networks of people talking about several topics of interest from current events to conferences I attend.  You can find a collection of them on flickr.

I look at these images and look for differences in the number of big clusters: some images have a “double yolk” – that I propose is a necessary (but not necessarily sufficient) condition of defining a topic to be “controversial”.  These two cluster networks have two well defined populations who lack much if any connection across the divide to the “other” side.

Some networks are highly populated but sparse, these are often the networks that form around brands where a central account tweets and is retweeted by many.  But these many lack much connection to one another.  So these brands form broadcast networks, not communities.

Some networks are dense single clusters with few if any “isolates”.  Isolates are people who say a term, and thus appear in the graph, but have no connections (follows, replies, ore mentions) to anyone else in the graph (at least as observed and reported by twitter at that time).  These dense clusters without isolates are topics where everyone is in-group.  Examples, like “scrm”, are technical and business terms that identify medium sized populations with high levels of density.

Have a look and see what patterns you can find.

flickr user, tag, and photo networks are now available in NodeXL

NodeXL has had a rudimentary flickr tag network data spigot for some time but we have just added a number of features to this data importer that makes it much more useful.

You can now select the number of network levels to include, an optional sample image file can be included for each tag, and the dialog now provides feedback as it requests the various parts of the network from Flickr.

The tag network generates maps like the following set of connections among terms related to “sociology”:

Twitter & flickr networks in NodeXL – Version 95: Lots of new features! Improved Performance!

01OctMay 7, 2015 By Marc Smith

Version 95 of NodeXL is hot off the compiler and we are pleased to announce several major features that create a social media network analysis dashboard.  From the NodeXL interface it is now possible to import networks from twitter, flickr, email, and a range of social network file formats.  Coming soon: support for more spigots – the connectors that pull data from leading social media sources.

NodeXL - Import Menu

What social media data most interest you?  We are considering integration with web and wiki crawlers, and support for YouTube, delicious, and enterprise data sources like Active Directory (LDAP), SharePoint, and Exchange.

This release also improves support for images, particularly those pulled from URLS, like twitter or facebook profile photos!

2009 - September - NodeXL - Twitter Search WIN09 Follows Network profile pictures

Here, for example, is a map of the connections among twitter accounts that tweeted the “WIN09” tag that was used in the recent Social Networks Summit at NYU (http://winworkshop.net/) The map illustrates the way the summit brought together previously separate clusters of people from the various disciplines that have been attracted to the study of networks in general and social networks in particular.  Size of the image equals the number of tweets that person created.

A refined version adds Edge Labels and color to highlight the different tie types in the graph: “follows” relationships and “replies to” and “mentions” and now scaled by “Followers”.

2009 - October - NodeXL Twitter Network WIN09

In both views, the high betweenness role of one twitter account is clear.

Release details below the fold….
