Workshop Abstract
Why do some social media and online groups succeed when others fail? How do different collections of online media and populations of authors and users differ from one another? How do patterns of contribution vary? How do these differences illustrate the roles people play within their communities?

Patterns of contribution and connection determines social media success. Visualizing these network patterns aids implementation, adoption, security and effectiveness of social media. A range of Internet social media including discussion groups, Twitter, enterprise social media, communities-of-practice, blogs and email are presented, analyzed and visualized. Network patterns are explored to illustrate the scope of variation among social media repositories and between types of contributors.

Maps and patterns of interaction deliver a far more comprehensive view of social media. These views generate actionable findings to improve social media effectiveness, syndication and collaborative outcomes. Network analysis and intelligence can guide community cultivation, coordination and development tasks. New network capabilities provision features that improve search, ranking and consumption of user generated content.

Delegates will be equipped to use social network techniques to improve overall effectiveness and impact of social media, communities-of-practice and social software applications. Participants may expect to achieve immediate improvements in key business activities such as marketing, sales, engineering, support, service, innovation and overall organizational effectiveness.

The Israel Internet Association is the official Israeli Chapter of the Internet Society. Their annual meeting is a central event of academics (sociologists, psychologists, business and law) as well as industry participants from sectors including mobile cellular companies and internet service suppliers.

My talk title: Analyzing Internet social media: visualizing social networks in (mobile) computer networks

Abstract: Social media systems on the Internet are sociologically interesting: why do some online groups succeed where others fail? How do different collections of online media and populations of authors differ from one another? How do patterns of contribution vary and how do these differences illustrate the roles people play within their communities? Several visualizations of patterns of contribution and connection in a range ofInternet social media including web boards, enterprise social networks services, and personal email are presented to illustrate the range of variation among social media repositories and between types of contributors. These images suggest that a more comprehensive overview of social media can generate sociologically relevant findings, improve community management tasks as well as provide features that can improve search and ranking of user generated content. A freely available tool, NodeXL, will be demonstrated to perform basic social media analysis tasks. Extending these tools to include mobile social software (“mososo”) data sets is a major new direction. In the not too distant future, mobile devices will possess a range of sensors and become more “socially aware”. When phones routinely notice each other the nature of social interaction will change dramatically. How will places and locations change when machines become socially aware? In this talk, sociologist Marc Smith, Chief Social Scientist for Connected Action Consulting Group, a provider of social media analysis platforms and services, will describe these new technologies and some ways of thinking about their implications.

I will attend an interesting discussion organized by Jeff Ubois on February 16th at the Internet Archive in San Francisco.

Saving Our Present for the Future: Personal Archiving 2010

From family photographs and personal papers to health and financial information, vital personal records are becoming digital. At the same time, creation and capture of new digital information has become a part of the daily routine for hundreds of millions of people. But what are the long term prospects for this data?

The combination of new capture devices (more than 1 billion camera phones will be sold in 2010) with the move from older forms of media is reshaping both our personal and collective memories. The size and complexity of personal collections growing, these collections are spread across different media (including film and paper!), and the lines between personal and professional, published and unpublished are being redrawn.

Whether these issues are described as personal archiving, lifestreams, personal digital heritage, preserving digital lives, scrapbooking, or managing intellectual estates, they present major challenges for both individuals and institutions: data loss is a nearly universal experience, whether it is due to hardware failure, obsolescence, user error, lack of institutional support, or any one of many other reasons. Some of these losses may not matter; but the early work of the Nobel prize winners of the 2030s is likely to be digital today, and therefore at risk in ways that previous scientific and literary creations were not. And it isn’t just Nobel winners that matter: the lives of all of us will be preserved in ways not previously possible.

On Tuesday, February 16, the Internet Archive will host a small conference for practitioners in personal digital archiving.

The morning sessions will be devoted to examples of current practice; the afternoon discussion will focus on developing recommendations for institutions and individuals, and on developing a research agenda. Among the questions we would like to discuss:

- What new social norms around preservation, access, and disclosure are emerging?
- How can we cope with the shift from simple (e.g. text) to rich media (e.g. moving images) in personal collections?
- What is the gap between current possibilities for preserving personal collections, and what is actually needed by both individuals and institutions?
- What tools and services are needed to better enable self-archiving?
- What new economic models to support personal archives may be evolve?
- What are the long term rights management issues? Are there unrecognized stakeholders we should begin to account for now?
- Can we better anticipate (and measure) losses of personal material?
- Do libraries, museums, and archives have a new responsibility to collect personal materials?
- What has already failed? Can we generalize about approaches that are likely to fail over time?
- What are the options for cultural heritage institutions — libraries, museums, and archives — that want to preserve the personal collections of citizens and scholars, creators and actors?
- What might be the risks of building archiving systems that are “too good” or overly applied?

For individuals, institutions, investors, entrepreneurs, and funding agencies thinking about how best to address these issues, this meeting will include a variety of examples that may be replicated, and will sharpen the questions (technical, social, economic) around personal archiving.

Researchers are interested in online dating and social networking. They are now exploring the role of information and communication technologies in all forms of interpersonal relationships. Practitioners from a growing and international relationship industry who want to cultivate and manage these relationship systems will attend along with policy-makers who seek to regulate their uses towards positive ends and avoid abuses.

Research in Internet relationships goes beyond a focus on dating sites and services to incorporate all the stages and types of relationships being shaped by social information technology. My demonstration will illustrate the ways NodeXL can map relationships in a variety of social media spaces, including YouTube, flickr, email, twitter, and (with the help of Bernie Hogan’s ego-network importer) Facebook. These maps can be a useful ways of distinguishing different kinds of relationship patterns present in these spaces, identifying key participants who acts as hubs or bridges.

Talks from SenseNetworks and MIT made the vision of a continuous “trail” document assembled by location and biological sensors from every human on earth seem not so outlandish. Samuel Madden from MIT spoke about opportunistic mobile wifi connectivity in moving vehicles. MIT rebuilt the WiFi stack to enable 13ms associations instead of 13 second associations with an access point. The result is that a car with such a WiFi card can drive along Boston city streets and exchange about 200KB a minute with open unsecured access points along the way. Free bandwidth in the city. What do they do with it? They stream live telemetry of a fleet of cabs. The cabs have accelerometers on them and GPS which is reported in almost real time back to a server. Along with the engine computer’s data, they collect a ton of data about traffic and road surface quality. They can see changing patterns in the activity levels of the cabs and infer changing activity at businesses.

A major theme of several presentations was crowdsourcing for science, with talks about ebird.org and galaxyzoo highlighting a distinction between sites that enable a group to collect data (ebird) – with the associated issues of data validity — and those sites that enable a group to annotate data (galaxyzoo) that has already been expertly collected.

In my talk, I focused on the idea that information want not to be free or expensive, rather, information wants to be copied. Like DNA, the goal of any string of bits is to make a duplicate copy of themselves. Several technical realities mean that while information may exist on a spectrum from private to public, it only moves in one direction (public) and almost never back. Once made public on the Internet, even if only for a moment, a photo, document, or other digital object is almost certainly to have been copied, indexed, backed up, or replicated. All efforts to delete a digital object once widely distributed is like trying to take wine out of water. This is because all cryptography become brittle over time, most bits end up exposed after they get distributed, and more events trigger widespread distribution of bits than expected (for example, linking a photo, and a location, to a tweet that gets copied to LinkedIn and Facebook, that then appears in an RSS feed and is copied from there to Friend Feed. As it travels, information looses more of the access controls that initially made it relatively private until it is effectively public.

Sadly, no picture for Luis Van Ahn’s talk: however, this presentation was a fascinating review of the capcha and re-capcha services and the new direction of providing translation services as language learning games. Luis Van Ahn invented capcha, felt bad about the cumulative human time wasted by filling out those squiggle word puzzels to get on a web site, and decided to harness capchas to a useful task: text recognition for books. To translate words from bad scans of books that the OCR software fails to recognize correctly, the garbled data is presented to humans, who, collectively, have translated millions of previously unintelligible words. Now, his new project is to expand the small user population of bi or multilingual speakers who can translate between languages. The approach applies the “Mechanical Turk” “human intelligence task” concept to language translation. His language translation service presents foreign language sentences to users with all dictionary words from a simple translation listed below. Users click on best word selection beneath each foreign word. The surprising results: pretty good translations AND users start learning a foreign language!

Welcome to all those Interested in sociology, technology, social media, mobile social software, or any and all forms of online communication. This blog is intended as a repository for information about research on computer-mediated collective action from a sociological perspective. Many people, from marketing, research and development, engineering, academic research, to managers of e-business are increasingly finding social science has methods and concepts that can help us understand the Internet-connected world we live in. We are fascinated by the changes these tools are making possible and hope to shed some light on ideas and research that can help you productively navigate the changes.

We’ll be updating this blog fairly often with pointers to interesting research and applications along with musings based on our own experiences. We hope you’ll find it informative, entertaining, enlightening, or some combination of the three.

Poke around, find out who we are, and pardon our dust as we finish constructing the site. We’ll be updating the various static pages in the next few weeks, but the blog is now live for posting and content updates, so stay tuned!
